As Hitler’s armies surrounded the city of Leningrad, Dmitri Shostakovich composed his Seventh Symphony. Written for massed battalions of musicians, this is music from the front line – they actually blasted it through loudspeakers at the Nazi forces. Every performance of the Leningrad Symphony is an event, and tonight Peter Oundjian pairs it with another mighty musical battle royale – Tchaikovsky’s sweeping First Piano Concerto. Pianist Xiayin Wang, described by Gramophone as ‘awesome’, throws down the gauntlet tonight.
